I had an idea...

...on the way home from my daughter's dance class after reading about Hinduism in my textbook for my world religions class. I wonder if there are social groups that perform the same social functions as a church (support/potlucks/artistic expression/etc.), but they are purely secular. I know about the UU church, but that's still a little too churchy. I will have to explore this further. My social support group would be for socially conscious vegetarians, and our vision would be to find the sacredness in human interaction with each other and the world around them. We would commemorate your typical life-cycle markers such as birth/puberty/marriage (supporting all marriages including GLBT)/death, as well as have monthly celebrations. We would fund it through membership dues....like scientology, only WAY better!
